Notes:
- The old and wealthy Patterson family were among Edwin Rivers' first supporters and financial backers.
- Arrogant, lazy, and flippant to the point of cruel indifference much of the time, Alex gradually was moved to disgust by the Headmaster's actions and began to suspect that he and the other Guardians were also 'on the menu.'
- Alex attacked the Headmaster when he was alone in his office, but his efforts were thwarted. The Headmaster preserved him for some time, attempting to absorb his valuable gift, but failed, ultimately leading to Alexander's painful death in a splicing experiment.
