Brief history: The Pattersons are an ancient bloodline, once gifted nobility in Ireland before planting new roots in America. When Edwin Rivers moved to his North Dakota estate to build his demented vision for Beata Academy, he found a neighbor and supporter in the nearby Patterson clan. Alexander Patterson, one of Edwin's four original Guardians, became sickened with the slaughter happening at the school and rebelled against the Headmaster, but he failed.
After Alexander's murder, the family's fortunes passed to his brother Adam, who would come to align himself with the daughter of the man who killed his brother. Adam was killed in the war by Vou Lupo, leaving his teenage son Ryan in control of the family's future. Ryan turned against his former master, and ever since, has pledged his support in protecting the school from harm. Today, he is a Guardian commander, and has broken with his family traditions by marrying a woman with an impure gift, though it's not exactly a happy relationship.
