One {guardians only}

An old apartment building sat in front of the guardians, eerily quiet despite the multitude of people living there. The door to the gunman's apartment did not appear different than the others, however, it did not mean it was not trapped. Oddly enough the key found on the man did not fit in the lock for the door. That being said, the guardians were allowed access by any means.

What will they do?

ooc: basically, use the rolling system to investigate the door, or possibly what is behind it. If you want to break down the door you will need to wait for me to tell you if your character broke it down or not. If you do decide to break it down immediately, roll another d20. If you are investigating beyond the door (cough, Linh) roll me two d20s and I will respond with that the ghost see and what they feed back to her. If you want to do any investigations. There will be a turn order for this so please wait for me to respond. If you aren't making an investigation but want your character to say something go ahead and post.

This was the apartment, this was the unit number, but this was not the key. The metal teeth slid an inch and a half into the slot before jamming, refusing to turn. Ryan grit his teeth, jiggling at the door knob, and when he pulled away the metal was hot to the touch.

Embers swirled out from between his clenched fingers. The poor kid was dead, but it looked like he wasn't doing spoiling their plans. Ryan kicked over the welcome mat, hoping for a convenient spare.

Click! Stop. The jangling of metal filled her ears, breaking the otherwise dead silence looming over the apartment complex, as though the entire community was aware of the crimes and actions taken on that day. It wasn't difficult with how small Rivers Pointe was in comparison to the rest of the globe, but news and gossip really did travel fast. Musty and rustic odors drifted in the treated area; maybe it'd be best to consider cleaning the Rose District up a little more. Ryan's foot swept over a large piece of fabric and Linh let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding.

Ghosts encircled the area, their presence humming through her veins, invisible and silent. Their chatter and old voices asked the dim floor of the building, some having no faces and others burned away to a smolder of black ashes. The pressure crushed her from all sides. A specter's faint cackling told her exactly what it was, sensing a rare sensation of... what was the word again? Linh searched her head for the syllables...

Nothing came up. A bitter taste lingered in her mouth as the spiral of ghosts came to her call.

"Search this room, please."

Her blood ran cold through her veins, the chilly wind of phantasmal movements harshly biting through everyone in the vicinity. The grip of her fingers clenching on her arm tightened, lips flatlined like the bright waves of a heart that could no linger beat. Something, anything useful. The faster this investigation was solved, the faster everyone else would be more at ease.

The Lupine Guard's captain tensed up and could feel his hair stand on end at the ghosts' arrival. The chill they brought in their wake was far from pleasant, to say the least. He hoped they would at least be helpful and cooperative. Montare stood near the door, flanked on either side by a guardsman, a man and woman who were both roughly his age. He'd been told to bring some of his clansmen that he trusted most, and the deer shapeshifters of Bloodline Cervos certainly fit that well. For now Montare waited for feedback from Ryan and Linh. If Ryan failed to find a key and Linh's ghosts reported that the other side of the door was clear, he was prepared to break it down to get inside.

The mat was tossed over with success. A deep imprint was settled into the rubber of the welcome mat in the outline of a key--it was not there. Perhaps someone may have already taken it.

The ghosts did not respond right away, but Linh could tell they entered the next room with nothing but a nod. They were gone for barely a moment, obviously not invested in their search. The only information they gave was that the room was ransacked, and a mess. Without much more information they vanished.

"Stop me if the ghosts find any traps." Montare moved to be in front of the apartment door, distancing himself such that he'd be able to kick it with ease. A moment later his foot was slamming into the door near the knob, intent on getting inside with force now. His guardsmen stood off to the side, ready to follow him and the Guardians inside once the door was open.

Despite the old and broken nature of the building, the door barely held up against Montare's kick-- even one of his 9 kids could do better. The lock broke against the wood. However, a current of electricity coursed through the door, connecting instantly with the man's foot and sending a rather painful shock up his body. A smoke trailed from the metal handle, which hung limply connected only by a single screw.

Linh gave an exasperated sigh. Maybe she should've asked spirits that she knew well to come with her to the investigation like Kenzie and Annie... There were few ghosts that were actually willing to listen to her - the ghosts had their own afterlives to attend to -, but she wasn't going to force any of them to obey her. In this instance, it might've been better to, considering that people's lives were on the line and the lack of information would only prove as a detriment. Broken from her stupor came Montare's foot smashing into the door.

"Wait, anh--"

Her warning came a little too late, and the door shivered with an electric slide. "Sorry," Linh winced and bit her lip. Even if the ghosts didn't say anything, it was inevitable that there were traps around. They were being very careful about not leaving any kind of leads for the Guardians to pick up... Not even a spare key was underneath the mattress. "I was told that the room is messy. Nothing else, but I'll ask them to look again." Hopefully they're more willing to cooperate this time.

Just the thinnest veneer of professionalism kept him from cracking up, but he kept it together, just running his hands through his hair with a long breath. "Thanks for your help, Lupo. Let's try that again." Leo didn't know how lucky he was to be alive so far into his new term, with just the Paw Patrol looking after him. Ryan flourished his arm, and light seemed to fill the seams between the doors, a curtain of flames suddenly washing down the front of the door. Watch your eyebrows.

It had been a last minute change, one he wasn't taking lightly. Devin's jacket was tucked neatly in the crook of his arm, his black wings flapping as he flew down the street toward where the other guardians would be. He grimmaced, still debating over his choice to join the invesgation at the apartment building. He wanted to be there for his in-laws, he truly did but...They were strong and they had Montare's best looking after him. There wasn't any real risk for them as far as they knew - God, he wish he had wood to knock on as he flew - and there was a chance that somehow he would have a better use with the others.

He was closing ground fast, the building coming into view along with the glow of...Fire? Devin's gaze flickered over to where he saw the familiar form of the three guardians that had set off, the door of the apartment masked by view by a wall of flames. "What the hell are they doing?" he whispered, quite dumbfounded as he landed, his wings fading into smoke and shadow behind him. This was seriously their plan, set the goddamn place on fire to get in? As he headed toward them in a quick pace, he grabbed a fire extinguisher that was hanging nearby. "What the hell?" he repeated louder as he reached the group, pushing past them as he aimed the the nozzle of the extinguisher at the door and pulled the trigger.

Linh's ghosts did not appear at her call, only a cold wind that somehow made it into the hallway. However, as soon as Ryan went to blast the door open, it caught ablaze. Sending a wave of heat at the guardians, lashing out with harsh tounges of heat. Thankfully the arrival of Devin cleared the fire from the door. A charred black stain remained on the door, still standing--unopened despite the guardian's best efforts.

There was an audible sigh of relief from Devin as he lowered the fire extinguisher, his gaze flickering up as he waited a few seconds to see if the fire alarms would go off but...It looks like they were in the clear. "Seriously, what the hell?" he snapped, giving none of them a time to even properly respond to his presence as he placed the fire extinguisher on the ground. "What were you thinking, Ryan? This isn't just the deceases' house, this is an apartment complex with many other innocent people inside! Burning the door down should have been the final thing to try," he growled, dark energy swirling around his shoulders as he took a step back...Before throwing all of his weight into the door - unaware that it was trapped but giving the other guardians no time to issue a warning.

The door disintegrates only after the initial shove stopped it. For a long moment, nothing happened, then the next everything did. The door disappeared into a pile of ash. The mechanism that sent electrical signals through it collapsed in on itself, sending a spark throughout the room with a multitude of resounding pops. Small trails of smoke followed them.

The room itself was a pure mess. The trash can was overturned, cabinets were opened with contents spilling across the kitchen. Leading into the living room, the couch cushions were across the room, a smashed tv lay against the wall--hallow of contents. The door to the bedroom was busted open, hanging only on one hinge. Without scorch marks. A rug was upturned, pilled near the couch, and the door to the bathroom was in a similar state.
