The kids would be fine, or that's what he kept on telling himself anyways.
Preston was on a slow crawl back to his house. He'd taken the slower route, knowing full well that every block from here to the edge of town would be filled with teens driving their old cars uncertainly up to the school's campus, or driving some rental they picked up, riding in some thirty-foot limousine with all their friends; or whatever the kids thought were cool these days. (God, he sounded so old...)
After dropping Jackson and Idyn off at their mothers to get ready, he tried not to linger. He'd stayed long enough to see Idyn in her dress and Jackson in his finest tux, old tie loaned from his old man, and he was happy for them, but at the same time he'd felt so on edge. As well as they got along when the kids were gone, there was no denying that strange, tense air between him and his ex-fiancee. And that wasn't even mentioning Cailin - who'd insisted on getting ready all on her own... which stung, admittedly...
There was a lot on his mind. You couldn't blame him for fucking up once and a while.
It'd happened so fast. Some dumb kid was rushing across the street to meet his friends. The car in front of him screeched to a halt and Preston, cruising just bit too close in his eagerness to get home, hit the breaks a moment to late. His front-end make a disgusting crunch, and he felt himself fly into the seat belt.
"SHIT."
His knuckles had turned a ghostly white on the grip of his steering wheel and he forced himself to take a deep breath. He made a reality check. So, he'd just rear-ended one of the nicest looking cars he'd ever seen. No big deal. Just pull to the side, apologize, and ... hopefully shit wouldn't blow up in his face?
As Preston took his car to the curb, he could only imagine some old, fat stuffy CEO or something puffing up at him. Or some high-nose guardian. PTA mother maybe, with venom nails? The possibility were endless. Never the less, he managed to put the engine off and step outside of the car, throwing his hands up and talking before they even stepped out.
"Look, I am so sorry, I'm having a kind of shitty day - " He said, peering over to their end to see the damage. "I fucked up."
