briiiiing me... to life ~ Empty

Sunlight poured through the many glass panels above the conservatory, painting the room in rich orange as the sun began to set. It was silent, undisturbed, yet still full of life. Peaceful for a moment longer, then cold air seeped in, fall leaves littering the entrance as Amira Jones stepped inside. She was heavily bundled up to protect herself from the chill outside, and sighed in relief as the permanent spring weather of the room reached her shivering skin. More than that, she thought she could almost feel all the life in the room, and wondered for a moment if that was another effect of her power. Or maybe she was just dramatic. Pulling off her red scarf, she idly walked around the rows, her fingers gently catching on the petal of a flower here and there as she tried to see how many she could name off the top of her head. Quite a few she had in her own garden back home, but there were an exciting number more exotic and beautiful. She made sure to snap a picture of these for her mother, knowing she'd enjoy it.

A particular plant caught her eye, and she made her way towards it. While everything else in the conservatory appeared to be lush and green in health, this one, a yellow hibiscus from the looks of it, seemed to pale in comparison. The leaves were drooping down, browning at the ends. The ground was littered with petals that had already given up. Amira frowned. The hibiscus was on the end of the row, and though the soil to the left was damp, the water hadn't appeared to reach the dying plant. She was fairly certain she could just find a watering can somewhere around, but then, she could also just...

Reaching forward, she gently placing her hand over the flower and closed her eyes in concentration. After a moment, the plant seemed to perk up. Life seeped into its petals as it turned green before her eyes. The flower spread open, the yellow growing vibrant, the whole plant reaching towards her hand as if it were the sun. On her forehead, a softly glowing crescent moon was visible for just a moment, until she pulled her hand away and it disappeared. She admired the plant, content with her work. Still, where it was now full of life, she felt drained. And very, very parched.

"You know," A bored voice resounded from the other side of the room. An equally bored looking boy stood at the end. "If you don't fix the problem with the plant, it will just die again." His voice carried easily across the full room. Reed had felt the plant come back to life. It was his intention later to fix the sprinkling system once he was done with his own plants. That is if he had the energy for it.

In a slow fashion, the boy bent under a shelf and pulled out bottled water. Bits of dirt and dust covered the top but were easily brushed away with the boy's sleeve. Sneakers scuffed against the dirt and concrete as he approached the girl, and as he got closer, it became more evident that he wasn't bored--but tired. A slack arm offered out the water bottle as he muttered something about being tired, barely audible to himself.

Amira looked up, realizing for the first time that she wasn't alone. At his words, she frowned, looking down at the bright plant in front of her. While he wasn't wrong, she couldn't seem to find the words to fully equivocate how she felt. "It's good practice, I guess." Is what she ended up going with, but that wasn't really it. Truth was, if she saw something in need, her natural instinct was to help. She had the power to do so, so why shouldn't she? She briefly thought back to the time she came across a baby bird with a broken wing, struggling in the snow. She could still feel her mother as she held her close, and hear her words on the ride home from the hospital. You can't do this anymore, Mir. Your heart may be big enough, but you're just not strong enough. You can't save everyone.

The sound of approaching footsteps pulled her out of her thoughts, and as the boy approached, she noticed how tired he looked. Gaping, she accepted the water bottle, heat rising to her cheeks. "Thank you, I - how did you know?" She stammered.

There was no response from the boy, only a glance toward a living plant. It's green leaves and blooming petals suddenly shriveled up, dropping low enough to touch the soft sodden ground. With a turn of his head, the plant returned to its original state, admittedly slightly worse for wear, but nothing time wouldn't fix. As if that wasn't enough explanation for Amira to understand, he stuck a thumb back at the multiple water bottles under the table. "I put those there because I often get like that."

Returning his hands to his pockets, the boy turned to the plant she brought back to life. "Might need an irrigation extension if it hasn't reached this far." Reed turned a tired eye to Amira, smirking. "Feel like getting your hands dirty?"

Amira watched as the boy turned and to her surprise, healed a plant as well. She'd never met anyone with a power so similar to her's - actually, until she attended this school, she'd never met anyone else with powers period. She assumed one of her parents had her power, but since she had no real information on her birth parents, she couldn't be sure. There were so many things she wanted to ask the boy, but she reined in her excitement and nodded. "Cool, cool. That makes sense." She said, trying desperately to seem casual.

Whatever jitters she just felt went out the door when he asked for her help. While Beata and a world of gifts were still new to her, this was something she was completely in her element in. She began removing her coat, returning the boy's smirk with one of her own. "Definitely. Oh! I'm Amira, by the way. I haven't introduced myself."

"Reed." The boy responded, pleased she readily was ready to work on the irrigation. Most students would give him a hard pass, but then again, he assumed that she wasn't like most students. Especially when it came to their powers. Ducking down, Reed found two shovels, each caked with dried dirt and two pairs of gloves. Well--more like one pair, and another 'pair' that were the same size, though different styles, a leather one and a flowery one. Amira was handed the real pair as Reed slipped on the two different gloves.

With a shovel in hand, Reed began searching for the irrigation line, hand burrowing deep into the soil. "It has to be around here somewhere if it doesn't reach that far." Pressing himself to the side, Reed made room for Amira to dig in.
